I have had the privilege of visiting Italy twice in my lifetime. My first time was on a grade 12 trip with EF Tours and unfortunately our food was made in bulk to feed us and other student tours, and we didn’t get to experience the authentic Italian food which I had dreamed about. My second adventure to Italy was with my Mom, and we traveled ourselves without a tour group to guide us on where we HAD to eat. The result of this trip? I’m pretty sure I gained an excessive amount of weight from eating all the pasta, bread, and pizza, but it was worth every mouthful. Here are some of my most memorable food highlights in Italy.
Pizza
This is a given. The wood fired pizza is to die for. You really can’t go wrong with this option, and hey, maybe your chef may just shape your pizza into a heart like he did for us. You’ll find great pizza everywhere but Naples is known to be home to some of the best.
Homemade Seafood Pasta
This was one of the best meals I’ve ever had on a trip, EVER! Sitting in a little restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean in Cinque Terre, we were served this big bowl of homemade pasta, and fresh seafood.
Antipasto
Another Italian classic and a great snack if you need something to hold you over until your plate of carbs gets served up in front of you. The fun part is, I don’t think I’ve ever had an antipasto that was the same!
Gnocchi
Another favourite Italian dish and served in several different ways. This dish below was with zucchini and shrimp in Milan.
Gelato
You won’t quite taste ice cream this good anywhere. What better way to cool down in 40 degree weather in Italy then with a scoop of tasty and fruit gelato?
Mussel or Clam Pasta
An unexpected favourite for me considering I wasn’t a mussel or clam fan before going to Italy. With fresh seafood and homemade pasta you really can’t go wrong with this dish. You’ll find the best version of this dish in coastal places such as the Amalfi Coast where we had the below dish.
