Your Ultimate Toronto Summer Bucket List

There’s just something about summer in Toronto, and if you live here, or ever visited during the summer months (June-September) you’ll know what I’m talking about. Patios spill onto sidewalks, parks turn into social hubs, and every weekend feels like there’s something to do. It’s short, and it goes by fast, but it’s the best time of year in the city and is what us locals live for.

As a local who has lived here for over a decade, it’s not about checking off the big attractions, of course those are necessary if you’ve never been here before, but it’s the easy, often free, things to do around the city in the summer that make it special.

Whether you’re planning an adventure here, or you’re a local looking to make the most of the nicer weather, here’s my Toronto summer bucket list.

Escape to the Toronto Islands

A quick (and cheap) ferry ride over to the Toronto Islands feels like stepping into a totally different world and taking a little vacation for the city chaos. Think beaches, lots of green space, charming cottages to admire, and best skyline views in the city.

I always make a point to make it to the Islands a few times throughout the summer. You can spend the day biking (they have bike shares, and rental companies right on the island), picnicking, or beach hopping. You can also rent kayaks or paddle boards to explore the island by the water. It’s the perfect spot to catch the sunset, and the best place to see views of the skyline.

The best part about Toronto Islands is it’s a cheap experience to have. The ferry is just shy of $10 CAD return for adults and under $5 CAD for children.

👉You can find the full schedule, and book your tickets online to beat the long queues here. There are also several companies along the waterfront that offer water taxi service. Although this cost a bit more, it can be more convenient if the ferry schedule doesn’t work for you. You can always take a water taxi over to the island, and take the ferry for free back.

Catch a Movie in the Park

Outdoor movie nights are a summer staple in the city. Plus, they’re free! All you need is a blanket, snacks, and a few friends, and you’ve got the perfect summer evening outing. Toronto Outdoor Picture Show puts on a variety of weekly movie nights throughout different parks across the city each summer and it’s such a fun vibe and a great way to enjoy the beautiful summer weather. There are usually food vendors and places to buy drinks (but no one is stopping you from bringing your own), and they can get pretty busy so make sure to arrive early if you want a good view of the screen.

Wander a Farmers’ Market

Slow mornings at a farmers’ market just hit differently. All the local produce and vendors is not only a great way to support and discover local vendors, but also get all the seasonal goodness that only comes alive in Ontario in the summer like corn, or peaches.

There are tons of local farmers’ markets across the city depending on what neighbourhood you’re in. I recommend to check out my farmers’ market guide here.

👉Another fav market in the city is Toronto’s Flower Market that happen monthly throughout the summer. The perfect place if you are flower obsessed like myself.

Plan the Perfect Park Hang

No Toronto summer is complete without a few solid park hangs, and since the majority of city dwellers live in condos, you’ll notice the parks truly become a social meeting point during the nicer months. You’ll find the grass covered in picnic blankets, with people enjoying drinks, snacks, a game of frisbee or spike ball, and just taking in the nice weather with their friends and families. It’s seriously such a vibe!

Trinity Bellwoods Park located on Queen West in Toronto is definitely one of the most popular choices in the summer months, but Christie Pitts, High Park, and some of the smaller parks across the city are all excellent options, and I can almost guarantee you can find a great one near you.

👉 Did you know that consuming alcoholic beverages in parks across Toronto is actually legal? Check out the full list here.

Dive Into Food & Street Festivals

From local street parties to big events like Taste of the Danforth, summer in Toronto is basically one long festival. There are only a few short months of nice weather so the city really makes the most of it by cramming as many festivals and events into them. You can always find something going on in the city that you can attend, and often times, just attending the festivals are free.

A full list of city festivals can be found here but some popular ones are:

Do a Brewery Crawl

Toronto has no shortage of craft breweries and one of my go-to activities in the summer when you’re looking for something different is to do a brewery crawl. It’s super easy to plan yourself, all you need to do is pick which part of the city you want to cover and map out the breweries in that area. The best breweries, in my opinion, are either on the west end of the city or the east end. Although there are some downtown/central, they are more touristy, or not as unique.

Crawl along and get a beer at each stop. Most breweries have great patios and fun vibes in the summer time. I have two itineraries available on my blog that you can follow:

Bike the Waterfront Trail

Hop on a bike and cruise along the Martin Goodman Trail. If you don’t have a bike, Toronto Bike Share is an easy option. If you aren’t comfortable biking on the city streets (I don’t blame you, I’m not either), than you can grab a bike share down by the waterfront, and hop on the trail which is about 56km long and stretches west to Etobicoke all the way east to Scarborough.

I’ve rented a bike in the summer and biked to High Park on the trail, or to the beaches in the east end. Leslieville Spit is also a great, car-free place to bike.

👉 Make sure you are familiar with how Toronto Bike Share works. It’s important to note that you do have to dock them every 30-minutes, and that you shouldn’t rent one city side and bring it on the ferry to Toronto Islands to avoid large fees and charges.

Visit Kensington Market for Pedestrian Sunday

One of the best ways to experience Toronto like a local is during Pedestrian Sundays in Kensington Market. On select summer Sundays, the neighbourhood closes its streets to cars and transforms into a lively, open-air celebration filled with music, street performers, pop-up vendors, and some of the city’s best food.

The vibe of Kensington Market on any day is cool and a little chaotic in the best way. You can spend hours wandering, snacking, vintage shopping, and soaking it all in. Even if you aren’t in the city on a Sunday, visiting on any day is a fun experience.

Catch an Outdoor Concert at RBC Amphitheatre

A non-negotiable in the summer is to take in an outdoor concert in the city. RBC Amphitheatre (previously known as Molson Amphitheatre, and then Budweiser Stage), is an open-air concert venue that truly gives you the best live music experience in the warmer months. Opt for tickets on the lawn, which is general admission, for the best party vibes at any concert during the summer. You can bring your own (or rent) lawn chairs, or blankets, but depending on the concert you’ll be up dancing most of the time anyway.

Cheer on the Blue Jays

The Blue Jays are all the rage since last years World Series but even before that, attending a Toronto Blue Jays baseball game has always been a necessity for Torontonians during the summer time. Not only are they one of the more affordable Toronto sports teams you can check out but the vibes on a sunny day when the roof of the Rogers Centre is open and you have the sun beating down on you with phenomenal views of the CN Tower, there’s nothing like it. Even if you aren’t a baseball fan, going to a Jays game at least once in your life is a must.

👉 Did you know you can make a Blue Jays game even more affordable by bringing your own food and drinks? The Rogers Centre allows you to do just that! There are a few restrictions but it is a great way to make the experience more approachable and family friendly on your wallet.

Find Zen at Free Outdoor Yoga Classes

One of my fav things to do in the summer months is to partake in yoga and fitness classes outside in the warmer weather. The last place I want to be in the summer is indoors so it’s the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors while also getting your sweat on.

There are several studios and instructors that offer different classes outdoors across the city but my go-to every summer is at Trillium Park. The classes are free and offered most Saturday and Sunday’s throughout the summer. It’s right by the water, with great views of the CN Tower, and it’s seriously the perfect atmosphere.

Rent a Fire Pit to Make S’mores

Did you know that you can have a bon fire right in the city? There are a few parks that have fire pits for rent through the City of Toronto. Including on Toronto Islands and in Trillium Park. You are responsible for bringing firewood, and any other supplies, but it can be a fun way to get some friends together and feel like you’re in cottage country for an evening.

Toronto summers may be short, but they’re packed with so much to do. From island escapes to spontaneous park hangs, it’s all about leaning into the season and saying yes to those last-minute plans, and less about trying to go to all the main tourist attractions.

Use this list as your starting point, and layer in your own favourites. I’d love to know what is on your must-do list in the city each summer. Share below in the comments!
